I fancy myself an intrepid, if boozy, anthropologist.

Years ago I remember seeing a calendar that had some random “holiday” or other reason to celebrate for every day, and it even suggested a drink to go with each celebration.  Or at least I thought I remembered it.  Google tells me I’m delusional and no such calendar exists.

However I did find a lot of really fun/random “Holidays” on my Google Pilgrimage to find this Holy Grail of Boozy Calendars, and I finally just decided to make my own.  Unfortunately it’s done with Powerpoint and MS Paint (because I’m actually a sales analyst and those are the only tools I have access to).

It also turned out to be WAY more work than I thought it would.  There are some days where very little worth even mentioning has happened.  Nonetheless, I present to you:  January 2012.  All of the holidays I mention are “real” (according to the internet anyway, and the internet NEVER lies).  Believe it or not, I left out some of the weirder ones, such as “Answer Your Cat’s Questions Day”, which is January 22.  My cats have never really asked me questions, and they don’t care for booze…. so I wasn’t sure where I would go with that one.  Possibly a White Russian, but I’m really hoping there’s a Big Lebowski Day later in the year.

If there is any interest at all, I’ll push forward and do the rest of the months.  If no one but me is in to this sort of thing, I’ll just keep celebrating “Tuesday” with a glass of Merlot, the way I’ve been doing for years.

I’m also totally open to suggestions, it anyone wants to change a day I have already listed with something better, or if you have a great idea for your favorite “holiday” later in the year.  Feel free to let me know in the comments!

Comments on: "A daily reason to celebrate + the cocktail to do it with!" (7)

  1. Jan 27 is VietNam Day? I had no idea. I hate rice wine. Maybe I’ll just have my usual Buttery Nipples.

  2. I’m really liking the Organize Yourself Day mostly because of the “Trapper Keeper” drink. It’s been years since I’ve heard the words trapper keeper. I also like Squirrel Appreciation Day, Macintosh was introduced day and last but not least, Prohibition Began day. I vote for pushing forward and adding more random holidays calendars. This might make an interesting idea for a coffee table book (insert legal mumbo jumbo protecting that idea, although it probably already exists somewhere in the world).

    • My sister used to have a “drink a day” calendar, but I think it was all random as opposed to my carefully thought out libations 🙂 (on a side note, I’ve tried to post this comment in reply to yours like 15 times and somehow managed to jack it up every friggin time.)

  3. How about: “Celebrating Being Kid Less Day”

It’s a day when single people receive gifts from friends with kids. It’s a good way to balance the act of gift giving considering the birthdays and other holidays requiring presents for tots.

  4. I thoroughly enjoy this. Like yourself, I am often stuck in the, “I guess I’ll have a glass of Pinot to celebrate this day” routine. I need to expand my alcoholic horizons. If you need an assistant to this project, my friend and I love a spreadsheet (which is really just a calendar waiting to happen).

    • Haha! That’s awesome! And I love that you’re a fellow excel geek. I finally just made a spreadsheet that has dates down the side and then a spot for a “holiday” and a cocktail beside each date. I can’t decide if I should go day-by-day like I did with January or if I should think of holidays (like a White Russian on Jeff Bridges’ birthday) and plug them in as they occur to me. Hmmm. Let me know if you have any great holiday ideas!
